The mighty salmon is an enticing lure to our guests at the lodge. This legendary fish flourishes in the Pacific Ocean waters that surround the island.
But salmon fishing is hardly the only activity available to our guests. Stuart Island’s location in the Desolation Sound area of British Columbia is rich in wildlife and spectacular scenery.
“You’ll have no problem finding something to do during your stay with us,” said Manager Justin Farr. “And if you just want to relax for a bit, you can lounge around the lodge, read a book or just gaze at the Cordero Strait and Canoe Pass rapids.”
Take in the Wildlife
The question won’t be if you’ll see wildlife native to the area around the lodge, but how many different species. Earl and Pearl are the resident bald eagles that nest on the island with us and take advantage of any leftover fish from our fishing excursions.
You’re likely to see dolphins, sea lions, bears and maybe even whales. The lodge is a great vantage point to catch a glimpse of the wildlife, but you’ll also get plenty of other chances if you go for a hike or take a boat trip.
Jet Boat Experience
Rapids Runner is our custom-built, aluminum hulled jet boat that is capable of carrying up to 12 people on tours of the waterways around the lodge. You’ll take in the wildlife as well as stunning scenery of neighboring islands.
The highlight of any jet boat trip is seeing the infamous Yuculta, Arran and Dent Rapids. Fast-moving currents create turbulent waters and collide violently to spawn whirlpools, which disappear just as quickly as they appear. The most fascinating part of this tour is seeing the wildlife that call these waters home and thrive in these currents.
Heli Tours
New to the lodge is the opportunity to see the area from the air. Our partner, 49 North Helicopters, pop over from its base in Campbell River to pick you up for what guarantees to be a trip of a lifetime.
You can spend a day on a guided hiking tour or take a half-day trip to a remote glacier lake where you’ll be able to kayak or stand-up paddleboard with a certified guide. You can also take a 30-minute or one-hour scenic tour of Desolation Sound.
